snow?

yep, it snowed in portland this morning -- a highly unusual event for the city, let alone this late in the season. i don't know if you can see it in this picture, but the snow was absolutely beautiful, just like a giant snow globe outside our window.

the joy of turning 25 - again

i had a GREAT birthday weekend. mn and i started friday off with a little grocery shopping - one of my favorite activities. we followed that with another one of my most favorite things to do - get a haircut. i know it probably seems a little wacky, but i love getting my hair cut. add to that the fact that we love the girl who cuts our hair (shout out to emily at rudy's on division) and there's a recipe for a good time.

once i was freshly quaffed, we made our way to a southern/bbq joint called "yam yam's" and boy was it yum-yummy! we'd read a few iffy reviews about the service, but the people working there were very friendly and the chef even came out and gave us a sample of his jambalaya (which we will be getting the next time we go there - more yumminess!). i was able to have a little taste of home in the form of rib tips, mac n cheese and hush puppies! here's a photo of kandinsky going crazy for my bbq and no, she didn't get any. (that's mn's latest masterpiece hanging on the wall behind us, by the way. isn't is über cool?)

speaking of kandinsky, we think we've discovered what's been going on with her health. it looks like she has addison's disease. it's a disease where there's a deficiency in her corticosteroid hormones. luckily, it's treatable with medication: one to balance her electrolytes and a steroid. we'll let you know about her progress as we know more. thank y'all for all the prayers and positive energy you've sent her way, and please continue to do so.

back to the birthday rundown … after a bit of relaxing, we headed off for my bday surprise. mn got us tickets to see two singer/songwriters at a local bar. it was a lot of fun - the first girl was a little low energy, but we really enjoyed the second girl. we always have such a great time on our treks to discover new talent.

saturday we set out on an adventure to vancouver, washington (just across the river from pdx) because i'd read an article about a soda shop that sells cheerwine. for any of you who haven't heard of cheerwine, it's heaven in a bottle: a carbonated beverage that's mainly sold in the nc region. unfortunately, the article i read was technically correct (the store has sold it once in the past) but they didn't have any that day nor have they had any since the one time they got it. oh well. we still enjoyed ourselves as we walked around an antique store laughing at the relics of the past. mn even found the "wee pals" lunch box she carried as a lil girl. very cool!

we also spent the afternoon baking sprinkles cupcakes. here's a picture of us with our tasty delights:

saturday night was our time to grill on the roof. we did surf and turf (steak and scallops) along with asparagus and a big piece of salmon. everything turned out deliciously and we ate way too much. we spent a quiet evening watching two episodes of "cops" and got plenty of rest in preparation for our sunday adventure...

we went rollerskating! the rink has a huge wurlitzer pipe organ and they play it for the sessions on sundays. in spite of the numerous children running around everywhere, it was a fabulous treat and we laughed a lot. there were quite a few bday parties going on so we got to hear "happy birthday" played on the organ five times.

thank you so much to all the sweet people who sent me birthday cards and called to say "happy birthday".

it's so wonderful to feel so much love from the people i love most in the world. i want to send a very special thank you to my girl, mn, for giving me the very best birthday weekend i could've ever asked for. you're my one in a million and i'm so very lucky. i love you.

we love and miss y'all very much!

hallelujah

we have great cause to praise the higher powers that be. kandinsky is finally on the road to recovery! after months and months, we found the right food (wellness brand canned, if anyone's looking for a great pet food) and her digestive issues are all cleared up. we can tell she's feeling much better, and now our next task is putting more weight on her, which we hope will be a breeze since she loves loves loves her new food.

this past weekend we spent time watching some baseball. oregon state university played the university of georgia (go dawgs!) at the ballpark near our apartment so we walked down there on saturday and watched until the rain moved in and postponed the game. it was great to see the diamond and hear the crack (i mean ding, since they use aluminum bats. what's up with that, by the way?) of the bats. i love baseball and can't wait for the season to start! mn is quite the trooper; always ready to watch a game with me even though she's not much of a fan. it's too slow for her tastes.

in the last entry, mn mentioned my upcoming bday. much in the same way she doesn't feel her age, i don't feel my age either so i've chosen 25 as my forever age. it's not too old and not too young. it's the goldilocks age, really. i'm looking forward to my bday celebration, although we've had to postpone part of it due to the situation with kandinsky. having her on canned food has been a great blessing in the way of a greatly-improved digestive system, but it involves feeding her three times a day, so we put off the overnight portion of the celebration until we're able to leave her alone for a longer period of time. i still don't know where we're going or what we're doing so you'll have to check back for updates. i'm super excited about being surprised, though.

since this seems to be a post filled with things we like, i'll add in our kudos for the tv show "the new adventures of old christine." i wasn't a seinfeld watcher back in the 90s so my like for julia louis-dreyfus has come in the past few years, via re-runs of the show and now this show. it's cleverly written and simply hilarious.

that about wraps up our latest adventures. we're just trying to keep it real out here in pdx land and keep doing unto others as we'd like done unto us. we love and miss y'all very much!
